Petra Sealy came from humble beginnings in Barbados, West Indies and immigrated to the United States at the age of fifteen. She lived in the Bedford Stuyvesant community in Brooklyn, New York and joined the U.S. Army a year after graduating from Prospect Heights High school.
Through her life experiences she has encountered many situations that could have drastically changed people’s lives if someone would have just spoken up. She readily admits that she was also prone to be silent in situations to which she should have lent her voice.
In her quest to help empower people, especially women, she became a Physician Assistant specializing in Women’s health. In that position, she became an advocate for women and provided a safe environment for them to speak about things that affected them. She quickly realized that people did not speak up and many times were encouraged to be quiet because ‘silence is golden.’
The lyrics to Emeli Sande’s song “Read all about it” have been one of the most powerful influencesin her life. The first sentence in the song states ‘You’ve got the words to change a Nation but you’re biting your tongue.’ Her hope is that through encouraging people to just speak, their words can change this nation.
